Q. What are my options when dealing with long term sickness?

We understand that when you have someone off on long-term sick it costs you money and can be a problem.

Long term sick cases are often difficult and complex because they come with the risk of a discrimination claim.

Maintaining reasonable contact with a sick employee is a balancing act, yet it is important to establish how:

  • Their recovery is progressing
  • To help you to plan their absence
  • To plan their return to work

Dealing with long-term sickness will involve getting medical reports from GP’s and Occupational Health in order to help their return to work, or inform whether a dismissal is your only option. 

These cases can involve various risks.

Make sure you treat each one on its own merits and take professional advice before you take action.
